Anyone can develop lower back pain, and eventually almost all of us do. In fact, nearly everyone will experience at least one episode of lower back pain in his or her lifetime.

  • Between 80% and 90% of people in the United States will have at least one episode of significant lower back pain in their lifetime. Fortunately, most cases are acute (short-lived) and are resolved with rest and other nonoperative therapies.
  • However, between 10% and 20% of people in the United States will develop chronic lower back pain—lower back pain that lasts for 3 months or longer.

The possible causes of lower back pain include injury, infection, cancer, and a broad range of musculoskeletal disorders and diseases. However, in up to 40% of cases, the nerves in the discs of the lower spine are the main source of pain. Those nerves and their surrounding tissue are the target of IDET*.
